Seemingly patroned by locals, the Hotel Delmano retains the quiet atmosphere of a social club even on its busy nights. With its dark wood bar, large mirrors and cracked plaster walls the space feels cared for and authenticly old in a way we’re willing to go along with because it feels that nice. As a purveyor of cocktails both of the classic and craft variety, it lives up to the promise in the air. It trucks in classics like the pre-Civil War Sazerac or absinthe--from a fountain. But its edge is in its lush innovative elixers by its master mixologist. Try the Devil’s Garden spiced with chipotle infused mescal, or for something lighter go for a Smoke & Flowers, which blends single-malt with the sweet liquor St. Germain. Small plates of chorizo, chocolate or cheeses are also available if you’re needing sustenance. And don’t take it personally if the mixologist rebuffs your queries about what he’s making at the counter. He may be testing out a recipe and not offer you a taste. Be patient. Return. Over time, you too will be rewarded by the secret of this place.
