Jim Shepard's latest collection of 11 short stories, Like You'd Understand, Anyway, cycles through a variety of settings with ease and vigor. In "My Aeschylus," he recounts the story of brothers caught up in opposite sides of a war, then deftly leaps into the travails of a 19th-century explorer named R.M. Beadle in "The First South Central Australian Expedition." He has taught at Williams College for over two decades and is joined tonight by Amy Hempel, who worked with Shepard on Unleashed: Poems by Writers' Dogs. Frighteningly prolific multi-instrumentalist Elliot Sharp ends the evening with god-only-knows what kind of music.
