While researching a story on gun-runners in North Africa, American reporter David Locke (Jack Nicholson) steals another man's identity to escape the failures of his own life. As all princes and paupers eventually discover, however, no life is without its share of problems. In a perfect twist of fate, Locke finds himself in the middle of the very story he was assigned to cover. Though the plot has the makings of a thriller — featuring government assassins, high-speed chases, and a love affair — Michelangelo Antonioni's story of identity and escapism is ultimately a portrait of mankind's perpetual struggle with alienation.
