Unflinching genre subverters Neurosis have a long history of being mistaken for metal. More akin to Swans than Slayer, the band incorporates sludge-y tempos, sure, but their gloomy atmospheres are adorned with alternately brooding and hardcore vocals, light industrial elements, psychedelic swirls, and an apocalyptic-folk artifice. Formed in 1985, the group has had an inarguable influence on everything from doom metal to hardcore, and its mix of aggressive breakdowns and airy abstraction pre-figured the new-millennium indie-metal scene by about a decade. Also renowned for its mind-bending live visuals, the group tromps into town tonight for an especially well-positioned show at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple alongside Grammy-nominated neo-metal mainstay Mastodon.
