One of the funnest things about indie rock is watching exciteable nerds' social stock rise as they learn to play instruments and jump around on stage like cardigan-clad baboons. Tonight's pack of pasty kids with guitars, vintage synthesizers, and liberal-arts degrees are a case in point. Openers Miss Fairchild are fronted by diminutive, collar-popping soul machine Daddy Wrall and sling period-perfect, Sly Stone-style funk; next up, Chicago's Mahjongg reimagine Afrobeat as a broken cyborg with a dirty mind. Spazzy headliners Get Him Eat Him squish power pop into a tightly wound ball, coat it lightly with lovelorn '90s indie rock, and trick it out with a bedroom's worth of electronic gewgaws.
