Equal parts Malcolm X and Abbie Hoffman, dead prez make hyper-intelligent and unflinchingly combative hip-hop that marries thug narratives and progressive politics. A Dave Chappelle fave — the comedian sang the duo's praises in his 2005 Block Party documentary — they pine hard for Public Enemy, tearing down racial disparities in government representation, healthcare, and public schools while simultaneously condemning the banality of mainstream rap and exhorting African-Americans to take control of their communities. Their oft-explicit cracka' hatin' aside, it's hard not to root for rappers who write revolutionary lines like, "Would you rather have a Lexus or justice? A dream or some substance? A Beamer, a necklace... or freedom?"
