During a certain week in October, NYC experiences a sharp influx of music-industry nerds, reminding everyone of this city's musical history and still-thriving scene. Darmstadt, a Brooklyn-based contemporary-music series, hosts its own mini-fest, Essential Repertoire, with a week of collaborative shows featuring otherworldly cult faves Stars Like Fleas and experimental underground fixture Lary 7, among others. Interpretations of works by legends such as John Cage, Cornelius Cardew, Yoko Ono, and Philip Glass dig up the roots of minimalism and Fluxus, while highlighting New York's continuing capacity for noncommercial talent.
