After a sketchy period in the very early aughts (think Irréversible, 2002) France has reclaimed its title as the steadiest manufacturer of strong European cinema — shimmering with heart and gorgeous interiors and the big, psychospiritual questions that US film tends to approach too clumsily. The only problem is that, with the exception of the annual Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, the full range of that country's contemporary cinematic imports rarely gets screened stateside. BAM's program of contemporary Gallic film therefore must not be missed, especially the NYC premieres of Francois Ozon's period drama Angel, and Just Anybody, Jacques Doillon's romance between a woman and a homeless thief.
