Veteran rockumentary-maker Julien Temple began gathering footage of Joe Strummer as early as 1976, when the self-proclaimed "mouthy little git" had his first hit, with the 101ers. In the interim, Temple has made movies about the Sex Pistols and Mick Jagger, 18th-century poets, French director Jean Vigo, and even bestowed out-of-this-world cult favorite Earth Girls are Easy on us in 1988. 2007's The Future is Unwritten takes a candid look at the soaring and dipping arch of Strummer's career, as told by former bandmates (all except for bassist Paul Simonon), filmies Jim Jarmusch, Matt Dillon, Johnny Depp, John Cusack, Steve Buscemi, and even Bono. The cherry on top is extensive testimony from the man himself (now deceased), larger in physique and not so hyper, speaking with unanticipated sagacity.
