Dean Wells' deeply-burrowing, straight-to-tape tunes for the Capstan Shafts evoke lo-fi legends like Sebadoh, Guided By Voices, and Apples in Stereo. Taken in pieces or through Wells' glut of individual albums (he's released more that 15 in the last five years), his genius is elusive. But when his best tunes are cherry-picked and performed — he's only started hitting stages in the last year or so — they bubble with a clear, unbound brilliance.
