A brooding harpy borne of the heart's darkest night, Diamanda Galás doesn't convey regret so much as wrack its innards relentlessly. Gifted with an operatic tone and a four-octave range, the East Village icon burrows her talents deeply into the face of the avant-garde, shrieking and shuddering in a constant state of Yoko-Ono aria. In tonight's annual Valentine's Day Massacre, the singer/pianist once again resurrects a set of smoky blues standards, unearthing the pained glory of the original murder balladeers. It's pins-and-needles stuff, sure, but the full-body workout leaves the listener feeling strangely refreshed. After all, when it comes to desperation, there's no better tonic than the vigorously flexing muscles of an aimless, wandering heart.
