Screwball comedy, thy name is His Girl Friday. Few know that this 1940 Howard Hawkes classic was actually a remake of a 1931 film called The Front Page. But whereas that film was the story of two newspapermen, this adaptation proffered the wrinkle for the ages, casting the sumptuous Rosalind Russell as editor Cary Grant's lead reporter — and ex-wife. Both actors are in tip-top form: she's about to marry another and he's dead-set on waylaying her in any way possible. The two bray in a fusillade of one-liners, and, to the film's credit, it's rarely clear whether their passion is professional or romantic.
