If Frank Sinatra had taken quaaludes to ease his mean streak, he might have turned out a bit like Calvin Johnson. Well after Ol' Blue Eyes departed, the deadpan crooner (and K Records head) blunted the edges of naïve pop as a part of Beat Happening. His later bands added the same edge to grass-fed indie rock (the Halo Benders) and, strangely enough, island rhythms (Dub Narcotic Sound System). He's extended this approach as a producer, helping shape both the Microphones' bedroom spiritualism and Beck's snot-blues free association. Now a solo act, Johnson exudes detachment and alarm in equal parts — with a little Rat Pack flair thrown in for good measure.
