Note:
There's an opening reception on Fri Feb 8 (7-9pm).
Over 30 artists fill Ad Hoc's walls with twisted fairy-tale imagery, tortured visages, and disemboweled beauties in Pop Subversion. Some confront the frustrations of city living: Elbowtoe's contorted Oedipus, whose titular figure aches for an escape from his cross-hatched lifestyle, and Lady Pink's Blue Boy, who longs to leave his mark on the decrepit city. Camilla d'Errico delivers a sticky, bee-stung love scene in Honey Locks, while grim Disney guardsmen stand armed and ready in Robert Steel's politically charged Juvenile Redirection. And, for the contemporary model-maker, Wayne Coe provides plastic-wrapped and consumer-ready options, from Guantanamo guard dogs to Abu Ghraib human pyramids.
