Half neo-no wave and half swaggering cow-punk, Old Time Relijun ax aggressively, hacking at traditional modes of composition until there's nothing left but the stump. They shake the shatooby out of simple riffs, bumping and swaying to slow-plunking tom-tom beats, as trebly guitars spike in and out of stringy bass lines. Lead singer Arrington De Dionyso also sways back and forth: at times his guttural grunt is demonic, while other times he drops the raw, high-pitched squeals of a boozy Gordan Gano. While the band's early career was defined by loose, alienating antics, they've tightened things up enough to woo the non-weirdos, too.
