James Ferraro and Spencer Clark might just be the Lewis and, uh, Clark of far-out drones. As the Skaters, the duo unflinchingly transform spontaneous yelps and blasts of percussion into hazardous swamps of sound, overflowing whatever dimly lit space they choose to explore. Their extensive discography of CD-R and mangled-cassette releases only hints at these brief, rapturous expeditions. Openers Kemialliset Ystävät, the recording project of tape twiddler Jan Anderzén, follows a better-trodden course, building hyper-dense collages from found snippets and low-fi beats; but beneath the arty fuzz is a legitimate melodic sensibility — Anderzén's "noise" is alternately jagged and lush. Also: he's Finnish.
