Domenico Cimmarosa's comic opera Il Matrimonio Segreto is a tawdry soap-fest, filled with romance, deceit, and characters running in farcical circles, declaring their feelings with hopeless desperation. The plot is appropriately convoluted: Carolina discovers that her aunt loves her lover. (Or is he her husband? Or is that the count who refuses to marry her sister?) Her father attempts to force her to marry for money rather than love, and then things get really complicated. Irreverent and historical, Jonathan Miller's production of Il Matrimonio — set in its original 18th-century context — contemplates issues of class immobility still relevant today.
