Langhorne Slim leads a charmed life. Not that he hasn't paid his dues, but his nonstop touring has propelled him steadily up the indie-folk ladder, and his barn-razing performance at this year's SXSW caught even more ears. Langhorne gets a crowd more riled up than a Southern preacher at a revival, and to be sure, his call-and-response, sing-alongs, and storytelling owe no small debt to such liturgical theatrics. His new, self-titled album, meanwhile, further cements him as an enviable songwriter of both heartbreak and hand-clapping camaraderie. To cadge a line from Pete Seeger (about Dylan), if songwriters are fishermen in a stream, catching whatever comes by, we pity the man downstream of Langhorne; he ain't catchin' much.
