Formed in 1979 as hardcore was taking over their native Los Angeles, Christian Death helped to create the gothic, Bauhaus-influenced sound that would come to be known as death rock. As the years (and lineup changes) rolled on, their sound became darker and more elaborate, absorbing industrial and metal influences. The band also added Diamanda Galás-like vocalist Maitri, who serves as a counterpoint to frontman Valor Kand and his sexually charged croon. Last year's American Inquisition, Christian Death's first album in seven years, was a virulent attack on Christian fundamentalism and American moral hypocrisy. Local avant-sludge rockers Hull and moody industrial band Inswarm open.
