The Rooftop Films series continues with Lynn Shelton's elegiac ode to the complexities of male friendship, My Effortless Brilliance (2008). Harvey Danger's Sean Nelson plays Eric, a solipsistic jerk whose backhanded insults drive Dylan (Basil Harris) to cut him off. Years later, a successful but little-changed Eric reconnects with Dylan, who reluctantly lets his ex-friend crash at his rustic Washington cabin for the weekend. When Dylan's laid-back new pal Jim (Calvin Reeder) enters the mix, a boozy cougar hunt and hilarious man-drama ensue. Combining spare production with pitch-perfect improvisation from the actors, Shelton creates an organic, captivating portrait of what it means to be drawn to and yet disheartened by the people you care for.
