North Korea may be producing more propaganda than popular culture these days, but South Korean cinema is flourishing, as evidenced by BAM's annual festival of contemporary Korean films. Ranging from whimsical to heart-wrenching, the films portray different aspects of Korean culture and history from a few unexpected angles. This year's selection includes Le Grand Chef, which takes its cues from reality cooking shows and a popular Korean comic-book series; and May 18, a portrayal of a watershed moment in Korean history: the Gwangju massacre of 1980, during which citizens confronted dictator Chun Doo Hwan's military in a violent rebellion.
