American freak-folksters may not have been able to translate the Finnish lyrics on Lau Nau's 2005 debut Kuutarha, but that didn't stop them from gushing over an obviously kindred spirit. Nau's half-whispered, half-sung coos guide her slowly unfurling compositions through flickering reliefs of prickly strings, warm hiss, and stray bells. Nau's sophomore release is a more deliberate example of her homemade tone poems. The title, Nukkuu, is Finnish for sleep — Nau reportedly recorded the album while her newborn napped. Tonight, Lau Nau opens for psych-noisemongers Indian Jewelry.
