Scattered around English Kills, Bushwick's DIY living/exhibition space, new sculptures from Brooklyn-based artist Hiroshi Shafer reinterpret and poke fun at male-female power struggles. His grotesque, sometimes dismembered figures subvert conventional sexuality and seem plucked from a surreal galaxy parallel to our own. Shafer combines elements from disparate sources — ranging from doll parts to Christmas ornaments — to form comical characters and jarring Mr. Potato Head mashups. Evrything seems Ok to me! also includes a brilliantly unsettling triptych of toe cleavage as well as a decapitated quadruped whose neck spurts mushrooms instead of blood.
