Avant-garde puppetry genius Dan Hurlin's newest work depicts the life of Mike Disfarmer, a portrait photographer in small-town Arkansas from the Great Depression to the 1950's who was discovered by the art world 20 years after his death. With Disfarmer, Hurlin — who was last at St. Ann's Warehouse with his award-winning Hiroshima Maiden — has crafted a quiet meditation on the man who stood behind the camera. Carefully choreographed with an incredible attention to detail, Disfarmer is remarkable less for the story it relates than for the all-absorbing physicality of the five puppeteers as they create this magical, yet ordinary, world.
