Winner of the 2008 Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Druid Ireland's The New Electric Ballroom is a bleak tale about three reclusive, unmarried sisters in a small Irish fishing town. The elder two constantly reenact a pivotal evening from their teenage years at the titular spot, a moment of sexual discovery and betrayal that has achieved mythic status through retelling. Then one night, they break routine, inviting a bachelor fisherman into their home and fantasy. Full of dark Irish humor and performed with consummate skill, this play beautifully captures life's frustrations and sense of entrapment, suggesting that writer Edna Walsh may be the Beckett of our time.
