A silent-era freestyle, Häxan (pronounced "Hek-sen") still casts a spell in this digital age. A "scientific" look at witchcraft circa the medieval period, Benjamin Christensen's 1922 classic transcends time through spooky, hocus-pocus visuals — whether animation, an intertitled slideshow on ancient cosmology, or a graphic recreation of the Inquisition. While the most ingenious (and mischievous) bit may be Christensen's self-cast Satan, the shorter 1967 version fits in another surreal element: William Burroughs as narrator. Monkey Town screens this latter-day edit tonight with a live score by Jeremy Slater, Matt Picone, Bradford Reed, Maxx Klaxxon, and Murder of Angels.
