With its ever-changing landscape, living in a city like New York is an experience that requires adaptability. Look no further than BAM's own backyard in Fort Greene, where shimmering luxury high-rises occupy lots that were once modest brownstones. Tonight's event brings together artists from diverse fields including writer Martha Cooley, filmmaker Jean-Louis Schuller, and designer Annie Coggan to discuss the price of progress and its toll on the happiness and identity of city dwellers.

BAM says…

Urban settings—and in particular, though not exclusively, New York City—offer the opportunity to frame the question along a range of scales—from the personal to the neighborhood to the city as a whole—as it relates to both physical and emotional spaces.

This evening brings together artists in fields as diverse as literature, architecture, and film, to explore the frequent ambiguities of progress and opening up related questions of definition, identity, values, process, and happiness.
