Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire is an American classic, but Australia’s Sydney Theatre Company — under the direction of the legendary Liv Ullmann — unleashes what feels like a new drama, one still rife with class issues, sexual tension, and clashes between familial and marital ties. Cate Blanchett stars as the crumbling Southern belle Blanche DuBois who takes refuge with sister Stella and loutish brother-in-law Stanley in their dreary, cramped New Orleans tenement. This production hones in on the uncomfortable threesome, but it is Blanche’s course we chart. Haughty, self-absorbed, and increasingly delusional, Blanchett gives her a fierce fragility that makes the downward spiral enthralling and utterly believable.
