"[Armitage] is always pushing the limits of possibility, spectacularly deconstructing the body with a diabolic flair." —Le Nouvel Observateur (France)
Known for her edgy, unbridled energy and hyper-kinetic take on the contemporary zeitgeist, Karole Armitage—the "punk ballerina"—has since expanded her choreographic vision, taking
on a multitude of genres, from opera to music videos, with credits that include Broadway's Hair (for which she received a Tony nomination) and Passing Strange.
Last at BAM with The Predators' Ball/Hucksters of the Soul (1996 Next Wave Festival), Armitage returns with the US premiere of Itutu, a haunting yet unabashedly festive mix of dance and music. Loosely inspired by African notions of syncretism, the off-kilter ballet of Armitage Gone! Dance, the polyrhythmic music of Lukas Ligeti, and the African pop sounds of Burkina Electric (performed live) become a celebratory meeting ground of cultures and art forms. Itutu creates a world without borders in which the modern and the traditional, the pop and the spiritual become one and the same.
