Mabou Mines' OBIE award-winning adaptation of A Doll's House goes well beyond Ibsen's material in deconstructing social conventions and the intricacies of relationships. Dollhouse is set in an emphatically male-dominated world, viscerally illustrated by statuesque women who accommodate swaggering, but tiny males (the actors are under four and a half feet tall) by squeezing into child-sized furniture and walking on their knees. Visionary director Lee Breuer finds a wealth of dark humor in Ibsen's script, and the entire production revels in an extravagant sense of melodrama to simultaneously parody and transcend its characters.
