Azita Youssefi's sudden transformation from no-wave gadfly (as the frontwoman of Chicago's beloved Scissor Girls) to solo cocktail chanteuse wasn't so surprising — record shops are full of reformed noiseniks — but the degree to which she pulled it off was. Four full-lengths later, Azita's jazzy pop feels perfectly natural. The blend of melodic piano and throaty cabaret vocals makes artists like Joan as Police Woman and Feist easy signposts, but her dramatic shifts from Nico chill to Carla Bozulich-esque undulating reveals something more sinister. And, despite some jaunty roadhouse ballads and poppy major chords, the song structures remain delightfully skewed.
