All-male British troupe Propeller stages Shakespeare with an eye towards how the work was done during playwright's day: their version of The Merchant of Venice at BAM is intensely physical, raucous, and full of slapstick and innuendos; not surprisingly, the production takes a special delight in Shakespeare's cross-dressing plot twists. Under the astute direction of Edward Hall, the themes of The Merchant of Venice — prejudice and the nature of true virtue — are highlighted through tests of bonds of both love and the law. It is certainly one of Shakespeare's thornier plays, and Propeller unapologetically delivers it in all of its unsettling complexity.
