One of the featured showcases of the Northside Festival, this is a top pick for us. Joel Thibodeau's stratospherically high voice and bright delivery don't sound particularly funereal, but he carries his Death Vessel moniker with unflinching pride. His 2005 debut Stay Close was a tautly composed folk record with a delightful sense of mordant wit and old-fashioned poignancy. Last year's Nothing Is Precious Enough for Us expanded the quirk-folk sound with more lush orchestrations and trenchant melodies. We love Brooklyn-based Bell, whose Björkian lead singer Olga Bell is a master of playful handclaps and blippy, chirping samples. Fellow Brooklynite chanteuse Pepi Ginsberg opens with a set of cleverly arranged folk rock.
