Note:
Following the parade, hit the official afterparty at the Dreamland Roller Rink. Two skating sessions are accompanied by burlesque, sideshow performers, and live music.
It's just not summer until hundreds of costumed revelers stream down Surf Avenue for the annual Mermaid Parade. Since its 1983 beginnings, it has become the country's largest art parade — any number of Flickr galleries will prove just how outrageous it is. And, it's set to become even bigger this year: the route is nearly twice as long (note the W 21st Street starting point), so definitely bring some comfy shoes and some extra glitter, in case you need to reapply halfway through.
