Merciless warlords, political spin, and religious foment render the Shakespearean canon rich terrain for mining contemporary global unrest. Enter Kuwaiti director Sulayman Al-Bassam, who transposes the War of the Roses to an unnamed Gulf State in his company's adaptation, Richard III: An Arab Tragedy. Lending a fresh take on age-old power structures, the production is performed in Arabic with English titles, as part of Muslim Voices: Arts & Ideas — a ten-day festival gathering works of artistic expression from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the US.
