Prospect Park Bandshell says…

San Francisco's Kronos Quartet has garnered a well-deserved reputation as one of the most successful and progressive string quartets in the world. Not only have they amassed a repertoire of well-known works by 20th-century composers like Bartók and Shostakovich, they also work closely with modern and avant-garde composers such as Terry Riley and Steve Reich, who commission new, exclusive pieces. Undoubtedly more eclectic than any ensemble performing today, the Kronos Quartet has frequently stepped outside the confines of "classical" music to collaborate with artists like Nine Inch Nails, John Zorn and (ugh) Dave Matthews Band, while their performances have been known to incorporate interpretations of "Purple Haze," "Marquee Moon" and other unorthodox, but crowd-pleasing choices. Tonight they're joined by the gypsy-punk string ensemble Luminescent Orchestrii.
