Is This Recyclable?
Aug 26, 2009 – Oct 4, 2009
Wednesdays–Fridays (noon–6pm)
Saturdays–Sundays (2–6pm)
Under Minerva Gallery
656 5th Ave
Under Minerva's latest group show, curated by Vanessa Juriga, invited multimedia artists of all stripes to exhibit work made from found and ready-made objects as well as recycled, non-traditional materials. Is It Recyclable? is a response to a shift in the art world where artists are repurposing materials instead of purchasing them as blank canvas. The exhibition traces the history of the recycled object from Marcel Duchamp's ready-mades to the mass-produced high art tchotchkes of the '80s and '90s. Now, 13 artists including Mark Cannariato, Gary Duehr, Caitlin Rueter, and Barbara Wisnoski contemplate the trend and its influences with regards to the environment, economy, consumerism, and the "new" meaning of art.
