Mark Morris is known as one of the most musical choreographers working today, making an effort to use live musicians when most companies rely on recordings. This week's show is no exception with two world premieres: "Looky" features an idiosyncratic score by Kyle Gann performed on a Disklavier (a digitally driven player piano) while "Socrates" is a three-part drama set to music by Erik Satie and performed by pianist/tenor duo Colin Fowler and Jean-Paul Fouchecourt respectively. A silent, solo piece from the repertory, "Behemoth," is thrown into the mix for counterpoint.

MARK MORRIS DANCE GROUP

Choreography by Mark Morris

“The Mark Morris experience is like nothing else in dance...[he] is a dancemaker and a spellbinder…a symbol of his times.”—The New Yorker

Mark Morris, modern dance’s most musical—and wittiest—choreographer returns to BAM with a mixed repertory of works performed by his brilliant company. The humorous Looky (NY premiere), choreographed to Kyle Gann’s score for Disklavier, pays tribute to classical and modern dance forms. Socrates (world premiere), set to music by Erik Satie, pairs Morris’ dancers with pianist Colin Fowler and tenor Jean-Paul Fouchécourt And the beautiful and fascinating Behemoth, performed in complete silence, reveals that Morris’ genius can be independent of his love of music.
