BAM screens a handful of international releases on the heels of their world premieres at the venerable Rotterdam Festival. Don't miss Miyoko, a dark love story focusing on the strange relationship between Japanese manga artist Shinichi Abe and his muse. Using surrealist imagery to capture his thoughts, director Yoshifumi Tsubota crafts a complex portrait of a tortured artist that's reminiscent of American Splendor (2003). Also of note is Michael Noer's prison drama R, which combines The Wire's journalistic attention to detail with the brutality of Oz to depict a life of confinement.
