Actor, playwright, novelist, screenwriter and filmmaker: Bill Gunn was a boundless artist. His premature death in 1989 denied audiences of what should have been more years of extraordinary work. Through forays in studio filmmaking (the film Stop, chronicled in his book Rhinestone Sharecropping) through the independent cult classic Ganja and Hess and his collaboration with Ishmael Reed on the video work Personal Problems, Bill Gunn defined what it is to be a groundbreaking.
