In Harun Farocki's Inextinguishable Fire, a man seated at a table asks, "How can we show you napalm in action?... When we show you pictures of napalm victims you'll close your eyes to the pictures. Then you'll close your eyes to the memory." What follows is an alarming and seductive filmic essay whose kitschy presentation heightens its severe message. The Woman's Film investigates the history of the women's movement in America shown with a selection of short documentaries exploring women's relationships to their culturally defined identity. Jean Rouch's startling film Les Maîtres Fous invites you to view a ceremony of a West African religious sect, Hauka (practiced from 1920s-1950s), in which members in a trance are possessed by spirits of Western colonial powers. And this series in homage to Independence Day kicks off with Eldridge Cleaver, about the man who set up the International Section of the Black Panther Party in Algeria, when "Revolution was the main theme of the day."

BAM Rose Cinemas says…

BAM says:

With Contraband Cinema, BAMcinématek posits the question, “What is political cinema?” by offering an expansive look at films that have challenged, confronted, revolutionized, and entertained audiences. The series celebrates the rich tradition of films as political weapons by presenting some of the most daring cinematic essays and filmic treatises to have emerged from both last century’s battles and today’s liberation struggles, presenting secret histories, previously suppressed agendas, and stories voiced from the underground.
