If theatre substitutes reality, then the Brick plays host to several alternative ones. Now in its second year, Game Play continues probing the dramatic possibilities of the technical. Two pieces are inspired by Italian master-choniclers. Digital puppets assisted by characters from popular video games go Roman in Grand Theft Ovid, and the narrative possibilities already embedded in Primo Levi's The Wrench are refitted with text messaging. Classic virtual storytelling also gets its due in Theater of the Arcade, while the outcome of guitar-controlled video-game battles is to be determined in Modal Kombat. The audience also gets to decide the fate of the Kewl-Aid Man in Second Life.

The Brick Theater says…

The Brick says:

Is art playable? Are video games cinematic? Is Machinima theatrical? Are smartphones a stage? Is there an architecture that connects these diverse media forms? What boundaries can be broken within (and without) the walls of an Off-Off Broadway Theater to change your view? With the increasing maturity of the modern video game, the possibilities for multi-media cross-over artworks cry out to be explored. Boot up your think pad, open your horizon expansion application and prepare to log in to The Brick's Game Play!
