As the names of both the festival and the gallery suggest, these events are all about taking advantage of our fave amendment — creatively, of course. The artists involved with VENT and the Soapbox Gallery tackle freeganism and consumer habits, world news headlines, advertising, illegal immigration and undocumented workers, the financial crisis, and law enforcement — all through interactive performance art. Interaction is of course key, as the artists ultimately seek to not only draw attention to these issues, but also start a new dialogue with audience participants. We're thinking an even better festival name would be DISCUSS; but that doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Note:

Check the schedule before you head out — and don't miss the big Soapbox Cabaret on Satuday, September 25. Watch the live feed if you can't make it to the gallery.

Soapbox Gallery says…

Our mission is to provide a forum for visual and performance artists to engage in the issues of our time and express themselves publicly without censorship. In the spirit of the humble yet mighty soapbox that encourages free speech, we have invited artists to enact, gesture and vent their thoughts on the prescient matters of the day.
