Zach Galifianakis as a patient in a psychiatric ward — and a mentor to a suicidal teen at that; this seems like a recipe for the best kind of disaster. Based on the 2006 novel by Ned Vizzini and inspired by his own bout with depression, It's Kind of a Funny Story is scheduled for release in October. See it at BAM tonight, and be one of the first to weigh in. A Q&A with directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck follows the screening.

BAM Rose Cinemas says…

In this New York City-set comedy-drama from the directors of Half Nelson and Sugar, 16-year-old Craig (Keir Gilchrist of United States of Tara), stressed out from the demands of being a teenager, checks himself into a mental health clinic. There he learns that the youth ward is closed and finds himself stuck in the adult ward. One of the patients, Bobby (Zach Galifianakis), soon becomes both Craig’s mentor and protégé. Craig is also drawn to another 16-year-old, Noelle (Emma Roberts). With a minimum five days’ stay imposed on him, Craig is sustained by friendships on both the inside and the outside as he learns more about life, love, and the pressures of growing up.
