Observatory, Brooklyn's unique art space and wunderkammer, invites you in from the cold to "see contemporary art that investigates futures past, futures possible, and other nestings." Retrofuturology, curated by Ethan Gould and Wythe Marschall of the Hollow Earth Society, features the visual art work of more than 30 emerging artists who explore time, imagination, and fact. This exhibit promises to be a veritable mash up of scientific allusions and pop culture references. And if you haven't gotten enough zombie culture lately, it's worth coming out just to see George Pfau's drawings. In a bold and surprisingly successful move, Pfau merges Umberto Boccioni's Futurist sculpture Unique Forms of Continuity in Space (1913-14) with a zombie from Lucio Fulci's 1978 film Zombi. He further layers the work with anatomical imagery and dotted lines, suspending the forms in a liminal space between dead and alive. Also worth checking out are Patti Jordan's haunting ink and graphite drawings and Rachel Debuque's installation work. Observatory shows us it's never too late to go back to the future.
