“While Djuna Barnes is best known for her modernist novels and plays like Nightwood (1936) and The Antiphon (1958), from 1913-1921, Barnes was a writer and illustrator for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and Vanity Fair among other publications. Newspaper Fiction explores the work she created while living in New York's Greenwich Village. Having been raised in an unconventional household, she forumlated an outsider’s perspective that helped her develop her work as an artist, and a liberal sexuality that would later find acceptance in the lesbian expatriate community in Paris. Check out Barnes's documentary photographs, drawings, illustrated stories, and works on paper to see how an early 20th century artist used journalism to understand the people, places, and political climate of this city.”
