Cabinet Magazine gathers a group of great writers and intellectuals to present yet another one of its unusual investigations, this one an attempt to get the story straight about Nicolas Chauvin, the man, and the Napoleonic hero, whose name would outlive him by centuries, however unflatteringly. Do we really owe the salty legacy of national fanaticism and sexual superiority complexes to this man who by some accounts had three fingers amputated, a fractured shoulder, and a disfiguring facial wound? Ned Beauman, Josh Cohen, Jeremy M. Davies, and Diego Trelles Paz are here to sort it all out, or at least try to without earning too many sideward glances in the process. Join these good fellows and the London-based White Review as they trod gently on egg shells in an evening of Chauvin, chauvinism, and their many inheritances. What, no women on the panel?
