3rd Ward says…

Participants will have the opportunity to vent, rant, and detail their aversion to “the artist statement”-- the much-loathed document which describes an artist’s visual practice in written form. Afterward, artists will be given several (at least five) good reasons why they should learn how to write a decent artist statement anyway.  The first meeting of this two-session workshop will focus on helping artists overcome their resistance to writing about their practice.  Participants will discuss several sample statements as a group and learn to identify what makes an artist’s statement strong or weak. Next, participants will learn what to do and what not to do when writing about their own work. At the end of the first session, artists will begin working on rough drafts of their own artist’s statements.  In the second workshop, artists will share their first drafts and learn how to revise and edit their writing. Artists will spend most of the second workshop shaping their first drafts into concise, original statements that they can use in professional communications.
