Luhring Augustine, a Chelsea gallery founded in 1985, opens shop in the still burgeoning arts district of Bushwick with an inaugural solo exhibition of the work of American film and video artist Charles Atlas, The Illusion of Democracy. The show presents two works never before presented in New York, Painting by Numbers (2008) and Plato's Alley (2009), as well as a large-scale video installation created specifically for this exhibition. Atlas, an artist known for his collaborations, has worked with such artists as Marina Abramovic, Leigh Bowery, Antony and the Johnsons, and Merce Cunningham. In keeping with the experimental and collaborative nature of the arts in this borough, this opening bodes well for the continued growth of the arts in Brooklyn.
