“In Chronic, Jennifer Reeves's short 16mm film based on episodes from her own life, presents the story of punk Midwestern teenager Gretchen who is institutionalized for what Reeves calls her “so-called mental illness." Sadie Benning's lo-fi video Flat is Beautiful provides a nice counterpoint coming-of-age story, that of a 12-year-old tomboy in Minneapolis raised by a single mother. The presentation of these nuanced portrayals of 80s adolescence and Gen-X feminism are followed by a discussion with the filmmakers. And if you haven't yet been to Light Industry's new Greenpoint space, this is as good a time as any to check it out.”
